Resource Recovery Zone (AKA Compost and Recycling)

Located on the northwestern corner of the Quad, alongside the Coffee House, the Resource Recovery Zone is where the entire “waste”-stream of the festival is sorted again in order to make sure everything that can be recycled, re-used, or composted is taken to the appropriate place. If you visit this area, you will find not only tons of Karma Patrol Volunteers having a good time sorting your resources, but you will also find more information on how you can take this Zero-Waste mentality back home with you.

2007 Workshops

Backyard Composting: How to build a compost heap.

Saturday, 11am, Dynamic Education

Project Compost

This workshop is for you if you have some backyard space and want to learn how to turn your food scraps, grass clippings, fallen leaves, and other organic matter into rich organic fertilizer. This workshop will be led by UC Davis’ very own waste diversion experts: Project Compost. You will leave this workshop with a strong understanding of how to build and maintain a compost pile and also learn how to use the finished compost in your organic gardens, houseplants, or trees.

Worm Composting: Compost indoors/outdoors, anywhere with a worm bin!

Sunday, 11am, Dynamic Education

Project Compost

Have you wanted to compost but don’t have any outdoor space? Or do you want to learn how to produce the world’s most exceptional organic fertilizer from your food scraps? Or are you simply ready to take things into your own hands and stop sending your organic matter to the polluting landfill? Well, this workshop will show you how easy and convenient it is to compost with redworms in a plastic bin. UC Davis’ very own waste diversion experts will tell you all that you need to know in order to start vermicomposting in your home, apartment, or garden. (Hint: you can even compost under your kitchen sink or on your porch). With this knowledge, you will dispel any myths that compost stinks!
