Abstract: The article discusses the Whole Earth Festival (WEF), which is a free annual event that takes place on the campus of the University of California, Davis. The event emphasizes solid waste minimization and diverts as much as 98% of the waste generated during the festival. The 2008 WEF is evaluated, taking into account the ways in which food vendors minimized resource use and the methods through which recovery stations were managed. Reusable dishware was used as an improvement on biodegradables, and food vendors paid a dishwashing fee to cover the cost of an institutional dishwasher rented by recycling coordinators. The importance of teaching social responsibility to consumers is discussed.
